Event Description

Discover Australia's rich heritage and culture at our monthly History Through Film sessions.

This month, join us for the autobiographical documentary, 'My Mother India.'

Director Safina Uberoi had a unique upbringing. She has a Sikh Indian father who collects kitsch calendars, an Aussie mother who hangs her knickers out to dry in front of horrified neighbours, a self-styled Guru grandfather, and a fiercely man-hating grandmother.

What begins as a quirky documentary about an eccentric, multicultural family unfolds into a complex commentary on the events of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that tore this family apart. This is a powerful tale of love and hate, exile and belonging, loss of identity and return to faith.

After the session, we can also show you how to access even more documentaries and films at home using Kanopy, absolutely free!
