Learn traditional sailors’ crafts from veteran traditional sailmaker, Rick Mitchell.
In this hands-on workshop, you will sew a small sampler - the kind of thing a sailmaker’s apprentice would be expected to sew before being allowed to work on a suit of sails. You will learn how to sew a double round seam, a double flat seam and how to roll a tabling.
Rick made his first sail in 1987. Since then, he has hand-sewn sails for the smaller historical vessels of the Australian heritage fleet. He has researched the history of sailmaking techniques both practically and historically. His work uses the same techniques that were used in northern Europe from the early seventeenth century to the late nineteenth century.
This workshop is suitable for makers of all levels.
