Event Description

Discover rich heritage and culture at our monthly History Through Film sessions.

In celebration of International Women's Day, this month's featured documentary is 'Abortion, Corruption and Cops: The Bertram Wainer Story'.

In 1967, a young woman came to Dr Wainer's Melbourne surgery seeking emergency medical attention for a backyard procedure gone wrong. For Dr Wainer, this was the start of a long, hard campaign to overturn laws that made terminations a criminal offence, forcing many women to turn to unskilled operators. In the process, he uncovered a tangled web of corruption, crooked deals and secret affairs.

Come along to watch this intriguing documentary and find out more. After the session, we can also show you how to stream even more documentaries and films from home using your library card, absolutely free.

Please note, this documentary covers themes that may upset some viewers. Please read the event description to decide if this program is right for you.
