Slip, Slop, Slap: A history of cancer prevention
Thursday 4 December 2025 at 6:30PM
Melton Library & Learning Hub
Event Description
Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat!
One of the most successful health campaigns in Australia's history was launched by Cancer Council in 1981. Sid the seagull, wearing shorts, t-shirt and a hat, tap-danced his way across our TV screens singing a catchy jingle to remind us of three easy ways of protecting against skin cancer.
More than just a catchy slogan, this well-loved Aussie campaign has saved countless lives as the core message of Cancer Council's SunSmart program. Join us to celebrate its history with Dr Thomas Kehoe, the official Historian of Cancer Council Victoria.
Dr Kehoe is a social scientist, author, and manager of Cancer Council's heritage project. Come along to hear from Dr Kehoe and learn about his ongoing research into the history of cancer prevention.
