Event Description

Is there a letter you've always wanted to write but didn't dare? What would you say in a letter to your younger self? Is there someone missing from your life who you wish you could talk to?

Letters are a powerful time capsule, a tangible record of a particular moment. Letters can communicate emotions, explain actions, reveal secrets, and help to heal wounds, but it’s a craft we’re in danger of losing in the modern age of instant communication. In this workshop, lead by Dr Sian Prior, we will explore the therapeutic pleasures of 'epistolary', or letter writing. We'll also look at some examples of published authors who have employed letter writing as a device, and analyse what makes a memorable missive.

Dr Sian Prior is a teacher, writer and broadcaster, working in radio, television, print and online. She is a regular columnist for The Age/Sydney Morning Herald, and is the author of two books; ‘Shy: a memoir’ (2014) and ‘Childless: a story of freedom and longing’ (2022). Sian has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Graduate Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing and a Doctorate in Creative Writing.
