Join Boonwurrung and Wemba Wemba Elder, Aunty Fay Stewart Muir, AOM and Dr Marguerita Stephens discussing their co-authored book, 'Banbu-deen: Kulin & Colonists at Port Phillip 1835-1851'.
Just over three years after John Batman and John Fawkner invaded the Country of the Kulin people, William Thomas landed at Port Phillip, one of five men appointed by the British government to protect the First Nations people of this land. It was 1839. For the next 28 years, William Thomas lived and worked in close proximity to the Kulin clans, learning their languages, travelling with them as they moved across Country, observing and often interfering in their lifeways.
Fay and Marguerita’s book is based on Thomas’ daily journal in which he recorded in detail, the struggles of the Kulin to hold Country and culture against the tide of the invasion and to accommodate the new world.
