Remembering the Satellite City
Wednesday 15 May 2024 at 12:00PM
Melton Library & Learning Hub
Event Description
2024 marks 50 years since the City of Melton was designated a 'Satellite City'.
Join our very own Local & Family History Librarian Dr Pete Minard and strategic planner Karl Sass as they reflect on what it meant for Melton to be designated a Satellite City in 1974 to the local community at the time, how it has affected the development of Melton and the legacies of satellite cities as a planning concept.
Satellite Cities were a post-World War Two concept of planned industrial and residential cities close to but separate from major metropolises. The satellite city concept was used all over the world. Melton was one of the first places in Australia designated to be a satellite city.
Come along to the library for this interesting chat and reflect on the changes to the City of Melton over the last 50 years.
