World War II and The Australian Women’s Land Army
Thursday 5 March 2026 at 6:30PM
Melton Library & Learning Hub
Event Description
During World War II, many women worked on farms and stations as part of the Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA). Through their tireless efforts, they grew food for our troops and kept the homefront running during some of the country's most turblent times.
The AWLA also published their own magazine, the 'Land Army Gazette', in which they shared official updates, as well as their experiences through stories, poetry, and pictures.
Sadly, their work went largely unrecognised for over forty years.
To celebrate International Women's Day and the inspiring efforts of these extraordinary women, hear from University of Melbourne history graduate Eloise Coughlin, who will discuss her research into the AWLA, and share their stories.
Eloise Coughlin recently graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History. Eloise looks forward to continuing her studies and is currently undertaking the Juris Doctor program at the University of Melbourne.
