Event Description

In 1949, amateur pilots Clarence Hugh McBean and Edward L. Sweeney flew their small aircraft from Essendon to Melton for an afternoon joyride. Flying low over the township, the lower wing-tip struck and snapped the power lines in front of the Mechanic's Hall. The resulting damage caused the plane to decline, crashing in a backstreet where both men were killed instantly.
